The Holy Mountain

1973 Directed By Alejandro Jodorowsky

This movie is perhaps the most insane cinematic adventure I’ve ever witnessed. Ever. Period. It makes “The Wall” look like Mary Poppins.

The back story to it is that the Chilean director, Jordorowsky, shot this film in Mexico with a cast of intentionally secluded, communal, shroomed out hippies. They apparently “lived” the script half a year before they filmed it, almost killing the entire cast.

It was bankrolled by Allen Klein (then manager of The Beatles), who had both John and George put up production money(!). Needless to say, money was no object and it’s obvious - each frame of this film is like still shot framed art. It’s incredible, and totally overwhelming. Each sequence is some allegory that, who the hell knows what means. The effect on the viewer is impulse shouting “oh my god!” throughout the film.

If your not easily disturbed by visually jarring things, you should check this out. Netflix it or something. It’s worth it just to see what The Beatles money went towards in film. Lucy in the sky is right! I can’t believe I haven’t seen this movie before now, but I won’t soon be forgetting it.
